Our Story
BK Taiko was born from a single, powerful desire: to push Taiko training to its highest potential. Founded in 2008 by Anita Lee Gallegos, BK Taiko is a cornerstone program of the Bushido Kenkyukai Japanese Martial & Cultural Arts Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Taiko is no ordinary drumming. A 2,000-year-old art form born in Japan, it fuses synchronized percussion with the precision and power of martial arts choreography. At the professional level, it demands extraordinary physical strength, stamina, and mental focus.
Students of BK Taiko train the whole self — developing physical fitness alongside drumming mastery, while immersing themselves in Taiko history, Japanese culture, and etiquette.
Training Levels
BK Taiko offers a complete journey — from the youngest drummers in New Mexico to seasoned performers. Every level honors the discipline and joy of Taiko.
The only dedicated Kids Taiko program in the state. Young drummers build rhythm, confidence, and a love for Japanese cultural tradition from the very start.

Deepen your practice and connect with fellow Taiko enthusiasts. This level bridges personal growth with the power of ensemble — community built through the drum.
For dedicated artists ready to take the stage. The performing group represents BK Taiko across New Mexico and beyond, bringing the thunder to audiences throughout the region.
The BK Taiko Way
Taiko at its highest level is an athletic pursuit. Students train their bodies rigorously — fitness is not an afterthought, it is the foundation of great drumming.
From basic strikes to complex rhythmic compositions, students develop real technical skill, musicality, and the expressive power that comes from years of dedicated practice.
Learning Taiko means entering a lineage over two millennia old. Students explore Japanese history, cultural values, and the etiquette that gives Taiko its distinctive spirit.
Taiko is not just drumming. It is the body in motion, the mind in focus, and the spirit made audible.
